Yeah, It is Fruit Season!

Most all of eagerly await fresh fruits grown and picked locally, some even in our own yards !

…. and of course we want to share these delights with our dogs          

 

Some words of advice, guide lines and poison issues !

 

Multiple very reliable sources on line agree on OK’s,  NOT OK’s

Some of these include American Kennel Club website, vetstreet.com, percha.com , and all agree on this advice.

 

First…

 site…but an upfront charge of $59.00 is charged for each incident.

However, on that site they have a Poison List of all sorts of toxins, from foods to items found in a garage, a garden  shred, and just about anything else and what to do if your pet ingests them

 

The OK’S ON FRUITS

Apples..a source of potassium, fiber, phytonutrients, Vit C,

 DO NOT let them have the core or thee seeds, which contain arsenic

 

  • Bananas..   a good source of potassium and carbohydrates , an inch is a good size treat without adding too many calories!!

 

  • Blackberries      a good source of antioxidants, Vitamins C, K, A and E as well as omega-3.      2-3 blackberries is a treat size , what really?  Thats right. 

2-3  blackberries is ,a treat size for your pup.

  •   Blueberries a good source  of antioxidants, selium, zinc and iron.  yep, you got it  2-3 berries is a good number.

 

  • Cantaloupe            Source of vitamins A, B complex, C plus, fiber, thiamine and niacin, but only 1 inch of a cantaloupe section is enough. 

 

  • Cranberries…   helps fight against urinary infections source os vitamin c , fiber and      manganese     2 tablespoons of stewed cranberries added to their food is a nice treat  1

Kiwis    source of Vitamin C, fiber, potassium  , but only a 1/2 to 1 inches slice.

 

  • Oranges  these contain vitamins A, C, B1 and B6, calcium and potassium. Give only a half of a segment ….may cause stomach if you give too much.   Also a good source  of folic acid and iron. REMOVE rind and seeds, or any part of an orange tree.

 

  • Pears   Yum, you and your dog are happy now.  

pears are also a great source fiber, folic acid, vitamins A, C, E, B1 , and B2 as well as fiber and folic acid, potassium.     1-2 cubes is a good limit.   Doesn’t seem like a lot, but…too much is not always the best .  

 

  • Pumpkin    Wow, what year round fruit to to go to !!!   Even canned pumpkin can be your best friends, best friend.  1-3 tablespoons of low or no added salt pureed pumpkin…NOT PUMPKIN PIE MIX……can be added to their food to firm up their stools and calm upset digestive systems….AND  it tastes way good !

Pumpkin accomplishes the lose stool issue by adding lots of fiber.!!, but it also is a great source of needed vitamin C, beta-carotene and alpha -carotene  good for their eye sight . Zinc , iron and potassium  round out the benefits.  Fresh pumpkin   is a special treatSeeds are ok but its recommend they be unsalted and roasted and ground.  PLEASE do not let them eat or chew on other part of the pumpkin because of small, sharp, airs on stem and leaves.

 

  • Strawberries and Raspberries   Also a taste treat with lots antioxidants, vitamins and fiber.   Too many……oops, lose stools.

Strawberries only 1/2 to 1 berry and 2-3 raspberries.

 

  • Summertime = WatermelonAgain , all the good stood and water !    1-3 pieces of of a 1” watermelon ,   NO seeds or rind !! They are poisonous to your pooch.

 

  The Unsafe Fruits:

Grapes, raisins

Avaracodos

Figs

Orange Tree and Lemon Tree..any part   Oranges peels and seeds are toxic as well as the bark

Coconut  White meat coconut is safe, but it is high in triglycerides.  A better choice  to give them the benefits of coconut , you can add some coconut oil to his food.

 

Remember, never let Fido chew on or swallow any pits, seeds or rinds!!   And check with your vet for any special considerations for your best friend.
